James M. Thomas was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, and lives there with his family. Thomas has many and varied interests and tries to dabble in as many of them as time permits. Thomas’ interests include Bible study, astronomy, space exploration, music (singing and playing), art, science fiction, and fantasy.

In the United States Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. The day commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress.  In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.  Flag Day is not an official federal holiday, though on June 14, 1937, Pennsylvania became the first (and only) U.S. state to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday, beginning in the town of Rennerdale. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States of America. Happy 236th Birthday, U.S.A.!

On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress meeting in Philadelphia adopted a statement. It announced that the thirteen American colonies, which were then at war with Great Britain, regarded themselves as independent states, and no longer a part of the British Empire. The Declaration was a formal explanation of why Congress had voted on July 2nd to declare independence from Great Britain, over a year after the outbreak of the American Revolutionary War. The United States of America celebrates its Independence Day on July 4th, the day Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration. Upon approval, a handwritten copy was sent to the local printing shop of John Dunlap. By the next morning, he had produced about 200 copies, which were distributed throughout the colonies.
